the need for boot disks

Hi,

I have a hpt370 raid controller and all my drives are connected on this controller. However when I boot the gentoo cd, it crashes during boot up. A way round this was to set ide3=noautotune which let me get to the prompt. But none of the raid partitions are detected. This i suspect is due to kernel options not being compiled in. Is there anyway of producing boot cds that later on access the gentoo install cd. Shouldn't this be better documented or perhaps even catered to in the install cd.
