what is confuzzling me is

i have also tried putting ChipId in my config file (4e48) but then X complains about e not being a number (and "" doesnt work either)
They both use the SAME device yet the fire gl drivers dont somehow do anything.
i havent had a desktop for over a month now so any help would really be appreciated!
i am running (hardened) gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7-r5, gcc 3.3.3-r6 and the latest ati drivers ( ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge ati-drivers),
but then again the "stable" drivers yield the same error. Like i said the config file is *exactly* the same in both cases just the [driver] section is different.

dr_dre

ps : the vesa and radeon drivers are VERY slow on my pc, we are talking 10 mins to log into kde...

The ChipID value is a hex number, which means it should be set like this:
Code:
ChipID 0x4e48

This is a rather strange problem - I've seen it a few times, but I don't remember anyone finding a clear solution. Are there any errors in the output of the ebuild?

no, the ebuild seems to be fine, doesnt spew out any error messages.
Tried using 0x4e48 as chipid but it still says No Device Found.

*starts pulling out hair*

any other ideas?

I had issues with the ati drives which i had to resolve by manipulating /proc/mtrr with a startup script prior to loading x. This corrected a overlaping memory map in the drivers.

check your dmesg for one, see if you get any strange mtrr errors

Code:
dmesg | grep fglrx

also, see this thread
