I am fighting with my Powerbook (550 MHz) to try to have a zippier XFree.

XFree with the fbdev driver works fine, but it is so slow... I searched the web for instructions and it seems to me that enabling this hardware acceleration is definitely possible, but I can't find the good configuration.

Is it or not possible and does anybody know about it ?

Thank you very much

emerge Xautoconfig

run Xautoconfig4 (the application, as root)

Then, you should have a perfect XF86Config4 file! The only thing you might want to change is the keyboard layout.....

Thank you very much. I tried it, but it's far from being perfect. I got a blue screen, and looking at the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, the X server is still using the 'fbdev' driver.

It's so bizarre, the module compiles and loads fine (I can see it doing an lsmod), but any attempt to launch X with another option than the fbdev driver fails.
Looking at the logs, I can see that the video card is recognized, but it always fails, with a V_BIOS error (can't read V_BIOS (5) ) or with a screen error ( Screen(s) found but none is usable... )

It's driving me crazy ! I love my Gentoo distribution so much but not being able to use my video card is such a pity !

Strange.... which kernel are you using? Try the latest benh-kernel from www.ppckernel.org and the latest xfree (4.2.1), that's the only thing I can come up with...

I'm using the latest benh kernel (2.4.20-pre9, I just recompiled it a few minutes ago). And I still can't get X working correctly with something else than the fbdev driver.

Xeasyconf gives me an XFree86Config-4 using the ati driver, but it's still not working.

Should I pass some arguments to the kernel in my yaboot.conf, is my kernel bad ? I'm trying to doubt...

Anyway if anybody has an idea...

Is the discussion going on over in does hardware acceleration work on ibook2 related to this? On the advice of ernstp in this thread, I tried emerging 4.2.1 on my TiBook, and I still got the horizontal purple jail cell I described in that thread.

As it is the same video card, finding the solution for the iBook will surely help with the TiBook... I will go on with the test tomorrow, but I'm really clueless for the time being :?

I just wanted you to know that you've got company. gogor and I have almost certainly got the same thing, and I've seen your V_BIOS(5) messages too.

I'm glad to see that I'm not completely alone :)

A google-groups search on V_BIOS gave me a few interesting pages, the most interesting is this one

I'll check this tomorrow

Michel Daenzer (sorry about the lack of accent marks) is the most reliable source on X on PPC that I've come across, so I would consider that information highly reliable.
