Good day.
I managed to run an emerge @world of my system just the past week, and for some reason I cannot seem to access startx/Gnome as root anymore after the update.
As a normal user, I can access just fine, and most things seem to be working fine.
It's just root that cannot seem to enter startx at all, neither from terminal nor trying to enter the root user from GDM.
Before that, I know the usual drill and warnings about running as root, so please don't mention that.
The only issue so far is that root can't enter Gnome Desktop at all, yet normal user can access without issues.
This is the only remaining issue I have right now to get the system back to full operating terms.
Once I do 'startx' on terminal, it stays on a black screen with the mouse pointer on-screen, and after some seconds it defaults back to the terminal.
If I try logging in from GDM, it simply throws me back to the GDM login screen after some seconds.

From what the log is saying is that xorg started and ran fine, saw nothing to do so stopped (it wasn't told to start gnome or anything).
In short, you probably need to make a .xinitrc file in root's home directory (/root)....

I do have the .xinitrc file located at ~/.xinitrc (or /root/.xinitrc)
Inside it I have the following:

With that in the xinitrc file, I still get the black screen with mouse pointer, and after a while I get kicked back to GDM/terminal.[/profile] |

I'm not sure where Gnome stores its logs, but I found the .xsession-errors file on the /root/ directory, maybe this could help somehow?
If anyone knows where the log file for Gnome specifically is, please let me know.

I did notice the ConsoleKit command there just yesterday, and figured ConsoleKit was an orphaned package, so I went ahead and uninstalled it.
As for the 'exec' order, I tried changing it so that dbus-launch goes first now, but sadly still the same thing happens.

Is that really what happened?
It wouldn't surprise me that some ninja flag or modification in a source code would disable the option to startx or enter Gnome as root, if that's my problem, then I would like to know what package it is specifically that is doing that. |

| That .xsession-errors says twm was being run so it's probably not relevant. Maybe GDM does logging somewhere, but I'd guess it's probably off by default since GTK/Qt apps have a culture of spewing megabytes of meaningless errors. |

I don't recall the claim that Jaglover referenced, but it wouldn't surprise me if that had been done. I know that the KDE/Plasma project has some of their tools rigged like that. There is an ongoing thread where people keep trying to patch around it poorly, ignoring the advice I posted about how to properly bypass it. |

I took care of the twm errors about fonts and so, I only needed some extra font packages, and now it doesn't complain about those.

While I can run the X session as user just fine, I had my entire workflow of 5 years on the root session, since that's how I've handled my laptop for so long.
I guess I can transfer everything from the root session to user, but what else is required besides moving everything to the user directories and making user the owner of the files? |

I would start with the steps you describe, then conduct a full inventory of system files against the Portage list of what should be installed. You want to find files that are unowned, or are owned but have been modified from their original contents. |

Well, for most package and compilations/installations I did, I made sure to follow the appropriate measures, so installed packages should not be an issue.
The things I am mostly worried about are all of the files I had in the /root/ home folder, as well as certain application configs, which are dependent and different for each user. That's mostly it. |
