bahh, nevermind. the setup was point to that file and when investigating the cdrom, the file was in 8.3 format... so i just executed that file instead... works great so far...

now it's asking me to change my desktop to 16 bit colour... but it's set to 16 in the config file:

Code:

; Color depth to use on multi-depth screens
;;"ScreenDepth" = "16"

what's the deal?

make sure something like this is in your XF86Config file
Code:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device     "Card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 16

And something to define the 16 bit depth ...
Code:

 SubSection "Display"
                Depth     16
                Modes     "1024x768"

If its not you probably arent in 16 bit color.

yeah, found something online that mentioned doing that...

i'm a bit farther now. if i just run "winex cstrike.exe" the app opens, i can briefly see the logo for CS then it crashes.

i found out that if i type "winex cstrike.exe -- cstrike.exe --console" i can get it to open. but when i try to play an online game, it says that i dont have the counter-strike mod installed.

sigh... i'll give up on it for now. i got starcraft working wonderfully and UT and Q3 running natively. just wish i could get counter-strike going....

thanks for your help though :D

for games, or anything that uses directx, use winex. I was only able to get wine working with a couple games, and a few apps, but once a few friends and i ordered a subscription to winex, it is BY FAR better. Too bad it encourages companies to not bother with making actual linux ports of their games.

Hang on.. you've got the retail version of counterstrike? I believe that version is really old + buggy.... Get the latest version online etc.

did you try to run winex --winver win98 --managed -- /path/to/counter-strike.

I was able to make counter strike working but not the retail version...

make sure to patch yourself to the lastest version.

I use winex 2.1 and 2.2 and everything works fine even better than windows ;)

I don't loose my sound if I switch to another apps and I dont get lags with smoke bomb ( my ping is always around 40-50 )

I run the retail version of CS thru just plain wine. I found that upgrading to the newest version of CS made it work whereas using some older versions made wine crash.
To get the part where it says "Cstrike mod not installed" to go away go under the "Custom Game" menu and see what shows up, you may have to "activate" the mod(s). I wrote a script to launch cs for me with wine
Code:
#!/bin/bash
xgamma -gamma 1.75
cd /home/myhomdir/.wine/fake_windows/Sierra/Counter-Strike/
wine cstrike.exe -- cstrike.exe -console -game cstrike

The gamma part ups my gamma and makes the game more playable cause it is really dark if you don't do that, atleast it is on my 3 year old monitor.

Does that help at all?

-Andrew
