I'm not really sure if this is a problem with the ebuild or the software or my system, but I emerged fceultra (and previously emerged svgalib) and now when I try to load a NES rom it gives me:

sh-2.05a$ fce <Game>

Starting FCE Ultra .80...

svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.
sh-2.05a$

Any ideas on what's going on?

SVGALib programs need to be run as root, you can find more info here

Thanks for the pointer towards that info. I have an itch to play some old final fantasy and megaman games :-P I've used fceultra before in winblows and it was pretty nice, I hope this version isn't too different (well besides lacking a gui).

Thanks!

The original Final Fantasy is one of my favorite games ever. I kinda prefer Tuxnes though to FCEUltra. It runs in X and has a pretty good frontend (GTuxnes). I don't think there is currently an ebuild for it so if I ever get around to learing more about portage I'll try to make one. You can find more about it at http://tuxnes.sourceforge.net.

I have found dracnes has an ebuild and seems to emulate well, but there is one catch...it sems to recognise my joystiick and disable the default keys but my joystick is unusable in the program...because it disables the keys joy2key does not work..any suggestions for joystick support in this program?

Hrmmm....

I might try darcnes because fceultra seems to have the wonderful quality of not only not running my game, but expanding my x terminal window fullscreen, and no combination of keys I know will bring it back, unless I switch to another virtual terminal (ctrl + alt + Fx) and try to kill x or reboot....

I was also thinking about getting maybe tuxnes, if they offer it, in rpm form until its an official ebuild, seeing as though we do have access to rpm. (Or should I use epm for that?)

tuxnes seems fairly full featured and solid compared to darcnes...suprised there is no ebuild for this emu, I tend to stick to portage for the ease of installation/uninstallation.

In any case (video) speed is kinda a roadblock on this one for me
In particular when sound is enabled (which seems to need manual tweaking to work properly ) animation becomes choppy. Seemingly this should not be a problem, as my hardware is certainly solid enough and I have both dri and mtrr enabled and working
...with verbose output i get the following messages:
Warning: 0.465 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 28 frames.
Warning: 0.715 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 43 frames.
Warning: 0.965 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 58 frames.
Warning: 1.215 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 73 frames.
Warning: 1.465 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 88 frames.
Warning: 1.715 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 103 frames.
Warning: 1.222 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 74 frames.
Warning: 1.472 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 89 frames.
Warning: 1.351 sec sound delay, resynchronizing
Skipping 82 frames.
I think the frame skipping would be the source of my woes
Question...
does "artsdsp gtuxnes" have the same effect as "artsdsp tuxnes (gtuxnes supplied options)"
This may or may not be wherein the problem lies as it seems that on my system "artsdsp tuxnes ..." runs more fluidly then "tuxnes ..."
Wondering what kinda soundcard you got reves, as the one built into my motherboard has me considering a soundblaster these days, particularly since I switched to kde 3.1beta (I find the new version of arts leaves much to be desired)

source is available...
If I can get the sound probles ironed out, I think that I like tux better then darc...but then again, ironing out the problems is half the fun for me
