My personal favorite is

It's quite funny...

It also smacks slightly of someone who has tried to run Gentoo and been embittered because they couldn't get it to work.

They also forgot to close their <h1> tag on the final heading. Oops.

Putting Gentoo users on the same level as ricers is a bit unfair; the Gentoo users don't annoy the general public and cause traffic hazards.

I guess it was funny enough. I'm sure everyone who likes a certain distribution has stupid ways of telling people why. I know this guy needs to read the forums more thouroughly. I've probably written some shit that would make his toes curl

Anybody else recognise the quotes from this very forum? One I noticed is from a thread a couple of days ago.

Edit: Oh he says they are from here at the start, I only skimmed the page so didn't notice.

But why is it such a common feature in this kind of anti-gentoo-trolling that patches are not upstreamed to the appropriate projects by gentoo devs? Is there a grain of truth in this? Or is it just prejudice?

Gentoo is like saving pennies, all the little benefits add up in the overall system .

( I hope this one makes it on there )

Made me laugh, in a psuedo[url=http://maddox.xmission.com//]maddox[url] type of way.

There's some truth to it, but it's basically tarring the majority with the comments of a few.

The way I see it gentoo arrived, everybody thought great!!! People plug it a lot to spread the word. Then it reached a point where people got sick of the constant plugging and flipped it into a joke on gentoo's weaknesses. Human nature to build it up and knock it down.

Don't take it too seriously it's only a laugh :)

Yea that's true but considering the fact that I recognise most of the quotes from these forums and I suppose the rest are from threads I haven't read or slashdot I can't help but think some people might be offended or at least embarrassed.

If somebody quoted you on a web page, holding up what you said as a prime example of what they believe to be a moron wouldn't you be a bit pissed?

PS. I must admit some of them are pretty damn funny though .

One week later: this is on the Arch forums.
One month later: the Arch people get the joke.

I find it surprising that people go to so much effort to not like us. Then again, people go to an awful lot of effort to not like Dubya... (the site is funny, check it out :D)

I suppose it depends on how you intepret his motives. Whether you see him as a comedian or a zealot. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get mad, but seeing as he's not quoted me I couldn't say for sure.

Fair enough he's taken the quotes out of context, but they were quotes put on these forums and slashdot, he's not tapped phones. A guy like that wants flames anyway, read the bit where is email addy is, get mad and you give him what he wants.

I concur. Though, a lot of quotes he gives are not ridiculous on their face ...

Oh come on, 90% of them are ill-informed at best.

I disagree; some examples:

* USE flags do make a huge difference in the capabilities of your installation, e.g. database support suited to you situation, LDAP for client apps, etc.

* Binary packaging does encourage sloppy coding/design, contrast with the stochastic API unit testing which occurs naturally with all the building with different configurations

* Gentoo does save time because it is easier to administer -- emerging does not require user intervention and its CPU usage can be tuned

Yes I agree Gentoo has many advantages (you're preaching to the converted here) but there are many factual errors and misunderstandings in those quotes. Although I don't think (like perhaps the author of the page does) these are a sign that Gentoo users are stupid but rather that out of thousands of posts on a forum dedicated to support people will express opinions etc that are shown to be incorrect - at the end of the day we are all learning and it's no big deal to make mistakes.

The only reason I use Gentoo is the vast collection of software in portage and the uniform method of installation. Now for this I could use Debian, but their politics scare me - they do provide a fine distribution however.

The optimization speedups are largely just pretend, I compiled my system with -march=athlon-xp -O -pipe and it feels no slower than any previous install, or any other distros. Yes, you heard me -O, it compiles faster and the code is generally safer in that we don't introduce GCC optimization bugs.

USE flags, also largely shit, I use GNOME, all I need is to keep KDE off my system since I like desktop consistency, any major system does this fairly well so it doesn't provide me with much of an advantage in the long run. It might save you from compiling a package here and there but it can also cause a lot of problems with missing functionality.

Real reasons to use Gentoo:

Hardened Gentoo, a nice effort to provide a system that's safe on multiple levels, I don't know of any distro that offers this, well if we look at the BSDs, OpenBSD is the father of all paranoids.

The Forums, aside the flamewars, the forums have a nice searchable database and helpful users - by far the most vibrant distro community I've ever seen. The IRC channel is also quite nice.

Lots of software available with easy installation, and it's easy to add to the collection.

Sounds like someone's really insecure about his choice of Linux distros, and needs to bash someone else to divert attention from his low self-esteem.

Of course, I would feel insecure too, if my machine was still running kernel 2.2, Gnome 1.4, and XFree 3.x :D
