Can't boot into Gentoo (Grub)

Grub version 0.94 setup:
root (hd0,0) // 0 is the boot partition, it does not want to load with (hd0, 2) where 3 is the root partition (in reality hda1 is boot and hd3 is root)

kernel /kernel-2.4.25-gentoo-r2 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda2

initrd /initrd-2.4.25-gentoo-r2

It looks like it is booting, but then it gives the following error:
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want=4176, limit=4096
attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want=4176, limit=4096
/#
and I am presented with a prompt. 'Help' command ellicits a list of available commands alias, bg, break, cd, chdir, continue, eval, exec, ....

I am stumped .. I went over the install a few times

I'm not sure what makes it not boot. Any advice is much appreciated

add ramdisk=8192 at the end of the kernel line in grub.conf.

same thing happened to me yesterday.

Alright, that worked, thanks.

Now ..

- the following error halts the boot:

Determining root device...
Mounting root...
mount: Mounting /dev/hda3 on /newroot failed: Invalid argument
The root block device is unspecified or not detected.

any ideas ?

Actually, never mind - it started working

- I didn't change anything, just kept trying ..
