first off, here is my system setup:
AMD 1.333 GHZ
512 RAM
GeForce2 MX 400 64MB
Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5.1
etc
when I was initially emerging everything on my system while logged in as root, sound worked fine. Now, while logged in as a regular user, I can get no sound from any application. I have tried OSS and esound from XMMS to no avail and have tried the same in mplayer. Also, as a user, I get no sound from the UT 2003 demo or any other application for that matter. What gives?
thanks in advance for the help,
-John |

update:
when I su and run a sound producing program (xmms, UT2003, etc), the sound works fine. Seems to be a permissions issue? Also, aumix will not open as a user, but opens and works fine as root.
thanks again,

Is your user in the audio group?
Search for it, there are many threads with this same problem and the solution (add users to the proper groups).

ok, so I have figured out a temp fix to the problem (based on posts by others regarding similar problems). I can play sound if I type this:

# chmod 770 /dev/sound

but of course the change does not stick after reboot. What gives? When I used 1.2 I never had any problems like this.
