So what is the distinction? If it's not about the actual stuff installed on the machine (or ideas about what should be installed) but is still Gentoo-related, it goes into Chat, but otherwise it belongs in Other Things? _________________ Thomas S. Howard |

GC is "Anything and everything about Gentoo except support questions."
Since posts about gentoo-wiki/portage going down appear here, I thought that it was suitable to move this topic here as well. _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

Yeah, but this is about packages.gentoo.org going down, not the wiki or gentoo-portage. Someone mentioned those as an alternative while the official Gentoo site is down. In fact, they both work just fine. _________________ Thomas S. Howard |

I meant that Gentoo Chat has been used in the past for people asking about downtime for gentoo-wiki/portage, so it seemed natural that a problem with package.g.o would also go there. _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

A message about one of the various (in)official Gentoo(-related) servers beeing down isn't really a classical support question so GC fits better. _________________ Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself |

OK, that makes sense. I suppose technically it could be a sort of support question, just not one for Gentoo Linux. _________________ Thomas S. Howard |

Exactly. OTG is meant for support on an individual Gentoo installation and most of the official/inofficial Gentoo servers aren't ever needed to setup/run/maintain that one (short of e.g. the master rsync servers and maybe the official documentation) _________________ Nothing is secure / Security is always a trade-off with usability / Do not assume anything / Trust no-one, nothing / Paranoia is your friend / Think for yourself |
