I decided to do this for fun. Install (from stage 1) of system and KDE took a bit over a day of compiling (host system is a toybox I use for goofing with ~2.4GHz P4).
Quite a wait.
That said - this distro *rocks*! I am quite pleased (and frankly, a bit surprised) at how much more quickly it seems to run than any of the other distros I've used under VMWare. At this point, this is purely subjective - I've not done any hardcore benchmarks. but there is no doubt that my *user experience* is much faster and smoother than any of the other distros I've used in this environment.
Well done, Gentoo gang!

So do you think you'll install gentoo onto your harddisk? _________________ AMD Athlon XP 2600+; 512M RAM;

And man - does it scream! So far I am *really* impressed with this distro. Everything seems to work with minimal hassle, and it is blazingly fast compared to most of the other distros i've tried. Only problem I have had was the (documented) network card detection on initital install.
