|
|
I haven't found anything on the forums concerning this and all the howto's I
found were telling me to use samba... is it possible without samba?
I don't need to share anything myself so I don't see the use of running the daemon.

You can install samba without running the daemon. (don't add it to your runlevels with rc-update).
then you can use smbmount to mount the shares.
Personally, I do run the daemon (so that I can be part of a windows domain), but I don't have any shares. |

possibly this doesn't directly answer your question, but you can use smbclient instead of the full blown samba to connect to windows shares and copy files to/from. It's more like using ftp, but you don't have to mount any filesystems... |

The linux kernel has support for mounting smb shares. You don't even need samba installed. Just compile support into your kernel, and "mount //computer/sharename /mnt/point -t smbfs" _________________

The package gnome-vfs-extras contains the samba protocol plugin (I don't know the real name of Windows's sharing files) for Nautilus.
Just type "smb:" in the adress editbox and you should see the network.
