so my last post (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=17225) got locked although it seems that the repliers (although with good intentions) did not bother to read my problem all the way through. i try again.

i want to be able to launch an x app automagically when i log in. the solution of adding it to the xinitrc file doesnt work because...

i do NOT have a .xinitrc file in my home dir.

i tried to make one, but no changes occured. i use xdm to login if that means anything. please help!

p.s. please do not lock a thread within 5 minutes of the post. sometimes mistakes do happen.

This has been posted so many times. Have you tried a search?

sorry Kanuslupus, I gotta help the guy out.
alright cf25, you should really do a search next time.
stop using xdm
1. rc-update del xdm default
2. at your console login (because it won't be graphical anymore) type startx which will read your ~/.xinitrc file and start whatever needs to be started.
3. when you exit flux, you'll be back to console.
shutdown commands [have to be root]
shutdown -h (to stop) or (-r to reboot) now.

ln -s .xinitrc .xsession

fyi, startx reads .xinitrc; xdm reads .xsession

hope this works

:)
