|
|
Does anyone know of a GNOME-compatible IDE for programming? I want to start learning Python but unfortunately I've looked and cannot find anything for GNOME. I know of KDevelope for KDE, but since I love GNOME so much I rather not have to have the long wait of compiling half of KDE and bloating my system.

Your choices are basically anjuta or monodevelop. AIUI anjuta is more polished and is mainly for C/C++ applications. monodevelop is for C# only but is very friendly and being developed very fast. In the Gnome world, Python is mainly used for prototyping, but Anjuta does have some Python support IIRC. _________________ No more cruft

Try Eclipse.
It comes with a built-in Java IDE, but there are plugins for lots of other languages as well, C/C++, Prolog, etc.
A quick search on Google turned up some info on something called PyDev. I have not ever used it since I've never used Python, but its worth at least investigating. |

I'm looking for one too I do most of my own work in those three languages.
Right now, i just use gedit and the shell to do development.
Anjuta is pretty capable, but doesn't have specific Python support; don't know much about Eclipse.
I can't think of a GNOME or even GTK+ IDE that has the real heavy-duty features you look for in an IDE:
* Class and file dependency browsing
* Keyword indexing/search
* Keyword completion
* Integrated debugger
* Code generation for testing
* Interaction with CVS, arch, etc.
* Packaging and distribution support
I'm also a GNOME fan ... this is one of the holes, along with an office presentation app.
EDIT:
* GUI builder
Boa-constructor is an effort towards a complete Python studio integrated with wxWidgets, but I found it hard to use.
EDIT2:
Eric IDE looks rather impressive, but it's Qt/KDE. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme
