OK, I've merged https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2272613.html#2272613 to this thread.

If you want better search results, please go to the search page and select the forum you want to search. Yes, you may have to search twice or thrice, but you'll get much better results.

Sometimes I encounter a problem that is really hard to put into a few words and I don't even know what forum the problem belongs to since my understanding of it is so vague. I'll put the name of the program or error message and sometimes another related keyword into the search to find an answer. If I use the quick search, 50% of the results are spam from OTW, Gentoo Chat and foreign forums and the other 50% is information that *might* help my plight.

I know you say search each forum individually but sometimes the answers to the problems overlap forums and I can forsee having many many tabs/windows open just to do a `simple' search on a specific topic. (Aside: this problem could be somewhat alleviated if this suggestion was implemented.)

When I started using Gentoo two years ago the forums were a lifeline-- I considered them to be a vital part of the operating system. Part of the power of the Gentoo-forums is the search, this beats mailing lists whose archives are very cumbersome to search and also reduces many RTFM answers. There was a time when I only required the forums to solve all my problems. Somewhere along the line this has changed-- which is understandable given the growing userbase and the fact that the forums haven't really changed much (even the theme is the same). The forums need to evolve to accomodate the larger userbase in order for Gentoo to continue to be an attractive operating system, and the next iteration needs to be better search capabilities.

Please, mods and admins, don't overlook the importance of the forums!

Thanks.

I've made some changes to the search function it will now filter out the international forums, OTW and the Dustbin. This applies to all searches apart from 'View your posts' and when searching a particular forum. I've also made it a bit quicker.

If you want to find anything in those forums please search for the particular forum from the search page.

I think to use the search with the own nick on the own main-forum is nearly a bad workaround. In the german forum the first user request "why are all my german posts deleted?" ;-)

It is possible to add a main-forum-field to the users profile so users in then international forums can view there own post in his own forum or remove the link 'View your posts' from users profile?

Why not just adding another search mode (switch case) that searches all forums when requesting the 'View posts from <username>' search page?

I've changed it so that forums aren't filtered if you are searching for a particular username, this applies if you search for author on the search page or if you click on the 'view all posts by ...' link in somebody's profile.

Hi, that's great not to mix up search results which are written in different languages.

But when I use "View unanswered posts" on a international forum, I would like to get unanswered posts from *that* particular forum.
Please, could some admin consider to fix up this little anoyance ?

Thanks. And thanks again for all the work you've already done on the forums. ;)

I think it's a good idea, particularly with regard to the international forums.

I've wanted to see it work on any individual forum.

This is great! Thanks, slick.

I know the phpBB search is pretty weak, but it sure would be nice to have some simple things in there like phrase match and exclusion terms.

Also, some Gentoo-specific things like allowing the '-' character to be part of a word rather than a separator would be pretty cool, so searching for "gentoo-sources" wouldn't be a completely useless exercise...

And if only there was some way to keep peoples' /etc/make.conf, xorg.conf and .config files out of the index... ;)

What about duplicate threads? I know it's not a big deal to go into the duplicate thread and look at the last(ish) post and click on the prefered thread. But it still feels like swimming through spam.

Wow, I must say thank you! I've never made a suggestion that was so quickly acted upon! (I know I wasn't the first)

Anyway, I know that I've suggested this before but I'm wondering why you didn't filter Gentoo Chat-- I don't want to sound like a complainer but I would really appreciate Gentoo Chat being in the filtered list...

Thanks again.

We kept Duplicate Threads unfiltered since it gives a richer search environment and thus a higher chance of finding the "official" thread. Similarly for Gentoo Chat, it does contain some useful technical threads. It doesn't get that much traffic anyway.

Yes, "gentoo" is not indexed for searching, please see the search stopwords list.

I find I often get better results by using google, and simply adding gentoo as one of the search terms. Apparently, if you do that, google searches gentoo forum postings for whatever you were looking for.

Is there any way we can implement this as an opt-in sort of thing? I usually just hit "view posts since last visit" (actually its bookmarked) and, while I don't appreciate OTW all the time, the forums certainly got a lot less...."colorful" once I stopped seeing OTW posts.
I don't know the first thing about phpBB, so kindly kick me in the posterior if I'm being an idiot, but I'm thinking of some sort of profile option that would let one select which forums were filtered or not in searches.
I'll agree with the professionality though, I just like the community feeling of OTW sometimes. You know, like that crazy aunt you keep locked up in the attic....you wouldn't bring her out for company, but damnit....she's family.

I also noticed I was getting a lot of hits from people's sigs-- the thread content was completely irrelevant to my search (so was the sig for that matter). Is there a way the sigs can be filtered-out too?
