Hi all,

I'm a bit confused as to what my fully qualified hostname is. I have an ADSL connection using DHCP & sit behind an ICS router also using DHCP - how do I know what my hostname is?

My DSL is provided by Netspace... does this mean my full hostname will be:
myhostname.netspace.net.au

or similar?

Thanks in advance.

Basically your hostname can be anything you want it to be. If you have more than one computer on your network the hostname for each of them need to be unique.

My hostname is only one word.

Well... its kind of hard to say. If you own a domain, and it's correctly associated with your IP address, that might be your FQDN. If you don't have a domain, chances are your ISP might give you one after a sense - for example, a Telstra Bigpond user might have CPE-144-132-150-134.syd.bigpond.net or something similar.

Chances are, if you're being asked for a FQDN, someone is going to try and resolve it in the future - make sure that whatever answer you give will be resolved correctly into your IP address by their resolver. :-)

P.S. For reference, as I am behind a NAT, my workstation at home is 192.168.1.2 - the machines FQDN is 'valkyr.private.network', and Nslookups performed against local DNS will return that IP for that FQDN.
