the place i work likes to block certain domains and uses microsoft proxy server to restrict access. we use NT and as such everything that transpires on these computers is monitored. you hear that you FAGS! yeah, you assholes over in the IT department?! yer a buncha fuckin morons!

i swear to god, they're the dumbest idiots on the face of this earth. it's funny because they didn't even setup the initial network. none of them have any idea what they're doing. when something goes wrong "ghost it!" i keep tellin em, all we need to do is defrag....

anyhow, webmail access is limited. very hard to find a webmail client that hasnt been blocked. so my friend made his own. i used it once. it's now blocked. why? when something accesses a secure server, alarms go off in the IT department and shit happens. i want to know if squirrel mail can work without a secure server and what the disadvantages would be.

anyhow, i gotta go, my boss wants to talk to me about something all of a sudden....

Well..I do not know if it works over plain http, but why shouldn't it? But I do know what a disadvantage is, namely that you will send your password plain-text. But what the heck, normal POP3 and IMAP is also plain-text. Https would be fine, but beware that your boss (or your network administrator) *could* read your password, because it is sent plain-text. But reading your posting I think they are not able to do so :P

Maybe you should try a tunnel? So normal http connection to 1 computer, and from there on you go thru your tunnel to your computer where you run webmail on. Authentication on computer 1 must be *a random password*, not the one you use for your mail.

But hey, don't be paranoid ;-)

As someone who administers Windows 2000 machines for part of his daily bread, thank you for bringing a smile to my face. :-P

As for https, no, I don't believe Squirrel requires it. Have you tried accessing it with a plain http protocol string? ( Warning, YMMV depending on your friends apache config )

Just to make it sure: squirrelmail doesn't need https. I don't even have mod_ssl installed, and squirrelmail is working fine.

Yours,
Larde.
