Mozilla 1.0 forgets my favorites :(

When I add a bookmark in mozilla:

1. it is there as long as mozilla is running.
2. If i open and close mozilla (inside an x session) it is there.
3. If I restart X and then open mozilla, it is gone...

can anyone shed any light on this for me?

It doesn't seem to remember my history between sessions either...

I installed the Java 2 plug-in as root, but it also doesn't seem to remember the install... when I'm logging in as root of a user and prompts me to install it again, even though the install completed and said it was successful. I'm hopelessly lost here...
