You could try esd (enlightened sound daemon: media-sound/esound)
Your sources have to support it, fortunately many do, but you may have to set the USE variable "esd" and recompile some stuff.
XMMS supports esd output, also you can have licq use esdplay for events, etc...

Here's a quick explanation. Some cards have hardware support for sound mixing, if that's available in the alsa driver for the sound board you'll see a [4] beside it here: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
The via 8233 doesn't so you need to use a software mixer. The most popular software mixers are arts and esound.
If you're using KDE then arts will be running by default and all you have to do is tell everything to use arts for output and with a little luck it will all work. |
