I recently did a fresh install on my system, and I was wondering what are the pros and cons of using the xfree package vs the xorg-x11 package? Is all functionality the same? Is performance the same? Stability?

there's a big thread here about xorg-x11. check it out. I installed it recently and all works great. I think the main advantage of going the xorg route is that updates will be in portage while no more xfree ebuilds will be added to portage.

I say go for the xorg. I would :)

I'd say definitely go for xorg. As clar77 says, xfree will not longer be updated but xorg will.

Switching from xfree to xorg on an existing installation can be rather fiddly, but for brand new installs you have a clean slate to start xorg on and hence have far fewer problems than those migrating from xfree.

They are basically the same, xorg-x11 has some more patches added.
Stability should also be the same or better with xorg.

Depending on your platform, xorg-x11 may be the only one supported (i.e on AMD64 xfree is deprecated).

I'm running xorg-x11 on my amd64 and without any problems whatsoever.

the xorg server is great.

plus, i much prefer all my fonts in /usr/share/fonts, rather than having them scattered all over the system.

XOrg currently is the GPL fork of XFree 4.4.0 RC2, IIRC. (Before the license change.) Since XFree 4.3.0 was released Feburary 2003, you can expect that it would have a lot of bugfixes and possibly be more stable. Also consider that XOrg is now the one and true GPL-compliant X server and that XFree will be no longer updated in Gentoo, or most other distributions. (Debian, RedHat, Mandrake...)

My previous install of xorg was great. Fonts looked better, and it seemed to start up a little faster.

Go ahead and try it, and if you get this please post in that thread. If you're successful, please, please post there and tell us what you might have done differently than us. Basically I reinstalled Gentoo, and now xorg-x11 won't compile - hopefully you'll have better luck.

EDIT: I'm beginning to suspect that my problem is related to Reiser4. So you probably won't have any trouble with xorg-x11.

Worked great for me except for a few problems with the winkey and my mouse's extra buttons/scrollwheels, but that's another problem I think. Still looking for a solution to that though.

I would also recommend xorg-x11, not only because of the license, but also due to a lot nice updated code (i.e. a lot of code done for xfree), like better support and drivers for a lot of things (like the drivers for my laptops grahpics (or patching to compensate for the lack of graphics, haha))

i guess you have one choice, and that is xorg-x11,
as this is what the developers have chosen.

I switched from XFree to Xorg last weekend. Other than having to redo my config file and the fact that I haven't figured out how to get the pretty blueglass cursors to work, Xorg rocks like ninja on my PC.

I won't say the switchover went without a hitch - I had issues with audio after switching to xorg.

However, if that happens to you, recompile your kernel [check for new options], reemerge your sound stuff (all of it, and I suggest updating to the latest version available to you), and it should work again. My only problem left is still something in alsa configuration, and that's next on the "figure out what's wrong" list.

A number of people have reported multimedia problems (videos don't play right, et cetera), so YMMV. But it seems pretty decent so far.

:)

Putting them into .icons/default/cursors/ works for me. I use other cursor set, however.

I just switched to xorg. Everything went perfectly. Is it my imagination or is xorg a lot faster than xfree?

i guess it is not placebo...

at least i measured KDE load times and glxgears results before and after the change (xfree->xorg).

glxgears (as i suspected) remained unchanged
KDE improved from 4-5 seconds to ~1 second! WHOAAA!!

[just to make sure i tried it again on another machine: the results were simillar. also i did not recompile KDE in any way after changing from xfree to xorg]

any ideas why this happens?

This thread is really interesting and I am thinking about replacing xfree with xorg. Is there some info how to do a smooth change?
I would go like this
Code:
emerge --unemerge xfree
emerge xorg-x11

Does anyone of you have experience where problems may be?
Thanks!

xorg works great :) just for debug reasons I reemerged xfree last night and hell, it couldnt even relocate my kde configurations. Nothing went as it should anymore

back to xorg now and love it :)

for those who do not like the too bright xterm:
for some obnoxious reason the old xfree xterm is still installed here and works perfectly in harmony with xorg :)

that should be ok, but you should take some extra steps, just in case...
[please correct me if i'm wrong]

1. package your current X installation
Code:
quickpkg xfree

2 a. if you want to continue using X until the last moment, you can
Code:
emerge -B --nodeps xorg-x11
emerge unmerge xfree
emerge -k xorg-x11

this way you will make your binary package of xorg while still using xfree. then you just remove xfree and install the xorg binaries. -> reduced X downtime

2 b. you can do as you said
Code:
emerge unmerge xfree
emerge xorg-x11

4. etc-update (important, this one!!)

5. cross your fingers

hope it helped.

dont forget to update your font indexes, font s are not in /usr/share/fonts

and rename your XF86Config to xorg.conf and update the font paths there too :)
