For some strange reason, one day when I booted up Gentoo I had the following errors come up:

* Checking root filesystem...
fsck: fsck.xfs: not found
fsck: Error 2 While executing fsck.xfs for /dev/root

.......

fsck2.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/BOOT
/dev/BOOT:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the ssuperblock is couupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

* Fsck could not correct all errors, manual repair needed

My boot partition is an ext2 filesystem. I have no idea what caused this to happen in the first place :? , but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just another update about what originally caused this...turns out I had emerged a base-layout, then blindly ran etc-update which overwrote my fstab Anyone reading this PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH before using etc-update unknowingly! It will save you A LOT of headache. See this post for more info...

This by far seems to be the most common way that people blow up their Gentoo install, thankfully its easilty fixed.
