Well, after many attempts to get xorg-x11 to work... I did, it would not work with the driver set to "radeon", but does with driver set to "ati".
lsmod shows radeon is loaded, anyone ever see anything like that before?
Oh, when radeon was tried, it bitched about no usable modes, and did not seem to detect the monitor, while the ati driver did detect my monitor.

Any ATI Radeon > 8500 uses the proprietary ATI X driver; anything less, the xorg X driver.
Both use the "radeon" kernel module. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

yes, with xfree I was using radeon, in 64bit, there is no proprierty drivers yet.
the odd thing was my FX86Config was not a drop in and go, and telling it to use ati worked and detected the monitor, the radeon did not.
Oh well, I will keep poking and searching, bound to figure it out.

What are your commands to get xorg-x11 to work on Ati Radeon 9600?
I try to install X on eMachines M6807 notebook which has ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 video card on 2.6.5-gentoo x86_64 with the genkernel method.
# emerge ati-drivers
gives some errors because all packages are masked,
so I did:
# emerge /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.9.0-r1.ebuild
This is ok so I did:
# emerge xorg-x11
# env-update
# source /etc/profile
# Xorg -configure
gives these errors:
...
Symbol xf86SetDDCproperties from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/r128_drv.o is unresolved!
*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at http://wiki.X.Org
for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

ATI propietart driver use fglrx kernel module, also a driver called fglrx in X.
In a 64bit enviroment you can't have (at the moment) Dri and 3d acceleration (propietary drivers are only 32bit) with any card greather than 9200... |

Is it possible to have X, without Dri and 3d acceleration, running in 64bit with any card greather than 9200?
i.e. X in a minimium way.

Yes, although not accelerated my ATI 9600 works, and the problem I did have was fixed in xorg-x11-6.7.0-r1.

How do you make ATI 9600 works with AMD64 and xorg-x11?
I tried but got errors, please see my previous post for details.

I'm using the 64bit mode, so I don't use the emergable ati-drivers, I just use what is in xorg-x11, and the kernel.
I built my kernel by hand, as opposed to genkernel.
here is my xorg.conf, maybe something in it might help serve as an example.
Code: | #
# xorg.conf
