Hello all.
Last week I was experiencing some weirdness exiting from an X server. I was using the nvidia drivers and was successfully playing quake and seeing the splash screen, however upon exiting KDE my whole system would lock up.
Another thing I was notcing was that my liquid stile for KDE was broken, no fancy menus, etc...
Anyway, i thought I had read somewhere that re-emerging kdelibs would fix liquid so I thought I would give that a try first.
I'm not sure if it was that action or something else that I performed but as it stands my X server doesn't start when using the nvidia drivers anymore. I get a:
Cannot initialize the nvidia kernel
and a
no screens found.
(wonderful)
Anyway, can someone please tell me what fixes this, and/or point me in the right direction (?!).
I've tried rebooting (unsuccessfully)
opengl-update nvidia (unsuccessfully)
emerge nvidia-glx (unsuccessfully)
emerge nvidia-kernel (unsuccessfully)
and i've tried the above in every such imaginable order.
any guidance would be considered a godsend.
thanks. |

ISTR the nvidia driver used to have a problem with having the kernel set up for SMP...
I always de-select SMP on kernel re-compiles by habit now and I had no problems installing the nvidia drivers on my last two gentoo builds.
This also assumes you're on a single processor box... _________________ Django |

Which version of nvidia-kernel? Version 3123 is broken and gives the error you are getting. Revert to 2960 if this is the case for you.

Well, on both my Geforce2MX and my Geforce4TI4200 box it works flawlessly, so I wouldn't call it generally broken. "Not working for everyone" seems to be correct though.
Nitpicking,
