java plugin works sort of....

I installed dev-java/sun-jdk version 1.4.2-04. All the sample applets work just fine. Java applets that download from the web work fine, unless, they send data back to a server. For example [url]go.icq.com[/url]. Yes I realize that linux has some wonderful icq clients but thats not the point. The point is java is not functioning correctly. It logs in and immeadiately logs out. Also my wife likes playing on www.pogo.com. From there I get an error saying that my Java is not properly installed. Yet I followed the instructions. I must be missing something and its driving me nuts. I figure it must have something to do with networking access, but I can't figure out what.
