ck2 or love4 ?

Hi,

I am stuck. I have been using love kernels for a couple of months and really like them except I cant get my CanoScan USB to work.

I recently tried ck2 sources and WOW , the scanner works! Only pb is I now have no sound.


The kernel configs are as identical as I can get them, and the rest of the system does not chamge inbetween boots so it must be kernel differnces.


Can anyone help me sort out one or the other so that I have a fully usable system.

Both kernels seem damn good, except to these sticking points.

I find ck2 has less hesitation on the mouse when working hard (big emerges) but task switching is lot less frequent. (I have seen an ebuild stopped for a couple of minutes when there are 2 or 3 running at the same time.)

In short they are both good and I will go with the one I get working fully.

I am currently using -ck sources since Reiser4 has not been included in recent love-sources.

The only downside immediately of Con's patchset is that he's on hiatus until the end of May, so, 2.6.4-ck2 will be the latest version for quite a while.

I found that you have to be patient with these love-source guys. They are a bit more advanced than the average Gentoo user such as myself. With enough pestering, they do answer your questions

Hwvr , if ck2 kernel works here and love dont, there is probably an issue that needs addressing.

I have seem other posts indicating that ck2 was better with USB, so I dont think its an odd-ball setup on my end.

Love contains the latest bk pull form the usb tree. This can (and has) broken and fixed many USB things. It varies from release to release.

What should I conclude from the situation?

Would I be wasting my time changing non-kernel software and configs stuff that has been shown to work under other sources? Or is it possible that love kernel can be made to work with this scanner driver?

Hotplugging works fine and xscanimage and scanimage -L find the device OK, it is just as soon as I try anything that actually drives the scanner it locks up . When I unplug the usb cable I get back control of the software and a message to the effect "device busy".

It's probably beyond my knowlege at this stage to start taking ck and love appart to see where the critiical difference is.

I would prefer to stick with love kernel , i've just moved over to Xorg.(thanks for the wrapper post earlier today ) there are other issues with ck and I dont want to change horses unless I have to.

If nothing else I like my alias make-love for rebuilding the kernel. make-ck doesnot have the same effect!

Does the scanner use libusb or an in kernel driver? I'm guessing it uses libusb now. Perhaps upgrading libusb to the latest unstable would be of a benefit.

Following your suggestion Steel I put libusb to ~x86

(I'm now running 2.6.6-love4 and have portage testing r4)

Did not change the behaviour one jot but it was worth a try.

I find the following in dmesg just after trying xscan:
