Hi all,
it's no problem updating things like for example "bash". But what happens, if I do an update for let's say "apache" or "sendmail"? I mean, what happens to my config files etc.? Can I handle all configs for those big packages with "etc-update"? What experiences do you have?
2nd question (a short one): What's the difference between updating a package with "emerge <ebuild>" and "emerge -u <ebuild>"? I think I get the same result ...
Greetings, Matthias |

I never had problems with updating (for example) kde. But I update my config files manual. |

On all directories protected by CONFIG_PROTECT (/etc is one by default), your config files will not be overwritten. You will need to update the config files using whatever method you like. etc-update is good. It can be augmented by Naan Yaar's Updating unmodified config files automatically. I have never encountered any technical limits of etc-update, even when updating things like apache and sendmail, if that's what you're worried about. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
