unless, of course, theres no more packages in portage and the developers are completely abandoning the ebuild from to focus on something with a bit of potential.... like rpm.

Seems to be a minor bug with packages.gentoo.org. I sent an email to the person responsible (accordingt to the info at the end of the page). I'm writing this here mainly so that other people don't do the same when reading this thread and the poor maintainer gets buried alive in email.
