My siblings use KDE3 on my box. I recently emerged a newer version, and unmerged mosfet-liquid (I was the only one who used it, and I'm on Fluxbox now). Everything still works, but the splash screen doesn't appear when starting KDE. Sometimes a ~15 pixel vertical black line appears at the center of the screen instead.
Where should I start looking?

Same thing happened to me, and no matter what I did, I could never get it to return...I got the same black line (like a cursor) instead of the startup screen...I tried everything I could to get things back to normal, but never worked...

It sorta works... this time I got a better view though: It's about 3 pixels wide and indeed 15 pixels tall. There's a 1-pixel black border, and it's filled with dark blue... so I'm guessing that the pixmaps it's looking for are missing. What do I emerge?

Just for a test maybe you can try installing one of the splash images from kde-look, and run:
Code:
ksplash --test
to see if it works :?:

Just figured it out... /usr/kde/3/share/apps had both ksplash and ksplash.default. ksplash only had locolor pics (in a separate directory), ksplash.default had hicolor pics too. Switched, ksplash --test works.
