|
|
I've finally got my system up and running well. Prob;lem is, I'm no where near finished installing the software I want/need, and I've gotten an error that my device is full. I assume that they mean the /var and the /var/tmp folder. I did a df -k and got the following info:
Code: | Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb3 5984368 49456 5934912 1% /
/dev/hdb5 8971152 2795304 6175848 32% /usr
/dev/hdb6 999696 110652 889044 12% /opt
/dev/hdb7 1999632 1998004 1628 100% /var
/dev/hdb8 7855692 13824 7841868 1% /home
none 451780 0 451780 0% /dev/shm
|
The /var has the following stuff in it:
Code: | total 20
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 16 Feb 19 04:37 cache
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 8 Feb 18 17:16 db
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 8 Feb 19 05:19 empty
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 72 Apr 9 17:23 lib
drwxrwxr-x 3 root uucp 48 Apr 9 18:59 lock
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Apr 10 04:41 log
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Apr 9 04:04 mail -> /var/spool/mail
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Apr 10 04:43 run
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 32 Apr 9 04:04 spool
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 8 Feb 19 04:28 state
drwxrwxrwt 4 root root 88 Apr 9 12:04 tmp
|
I thought to delete the contents of the /tmp folder, but it contained :
Code: | total 24
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1 Apr 8 16:03 emerge-webrsync
drwxr-xr-x 229 portage portage 4096 Apr 9 20:14 portage
|
and I didn't know whether the portage folder was a duplicate or the original required one.
Basically what is in the /var that I can delete(Without killing other stuff.. I thought /var was a temporary holding ground for compiling operations.)
Cheers and Thanks in advance.

/var/tmp/portage can be deleted, as you can see in your /etc/make.conf:
Code: | # PORTAGE_TMPDIR is the location portage will use for compilations and
# temporary storage of data. This can get VERY large depending upon
# the application being installed.
PORTAGE_TMPDIR=/var/tmp |
