following the gentoo mips installation guide, i type in the command
bootp(): root=/dev/ram0
to boot gentoo as i have a windows based TFTP server setup and i get this message
Setting $netaddr to 192.168.20.5 (from server)
File not found on server
Unable to excute bootp():
can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong so I can get it booted and running

The error message given to you by the SGI Prom more or less tells you what is wrong -- It's unable to find the file to netboot on your windows-based TFTP server. You'll want to tweak the setup on this tftp server so that it can send the appropriate file to the Indy. As I have no experience in Windiws TFTP servers, this is all I can recommend right now.
