1k = 1024
5k = 5120
5000 = 5000
Is everyone less confused? I know I'm not. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

I think fghellar was reporting the number of actual users when he saw the 'k' mark reached. I happened to be on and saw it at 4990 or something and waited for it to hit 5000 exactly. I use real math, not HD mfg math _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I think fgheller should be allowed to speak for himself, but if he was just reporting the actual number of users on those dates and not merely extrapolating the value to a decimal number for everyone he's got great timing because each of his first three updates are perfectly in line with counting like this:
1k = 1024
2k = 2048 (i.e. 2 * 1024)
3k = 3072 (i.e. 3 * 1024) _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

I don't imagine it is that difficult. I did it for 5000. Also, here he mentions 'missing' the 3k (3072) mark.
But you are right... only he knows for sure. Speaking of... he hasn't been around in a while. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

But I'm back now, just to say we just crossed the 6k (6*1024=6144) users line (despite klieber's crusade against user count rise )... _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com

I think he's talking about this crusade.

OK, in any crusade somebody should get killed. Who are we going to kill here?
PS. not me, because then the user count would decrease

Well, I was traveling these last few days, but it looks like we reached the 8k users mark somewhere in the range 2002-11-{15,16,17}. _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com

So, is it more like a linear increase?
I guess we may have a larger increase when 1.4 is released (all the marketing in Linux sites may bring some people, I think) |

Actually, no -- between 7k and 8k users I went in and did some account maintenance to clean out old, unactivated or orphaned accounts. That resulted in about 500 accounts being deleted, so it's not quite a linear scale.

Ok, Kenny survived this month, so we got to 9k (9216) users a little earlier.
Note to klieber: crossing the line back is not allowed, so you'll have to wait a few more days before killing any Kennys... _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com

I'm just saving it up so it really has an effect the next time I delete user accounts.
