On a battlefield where a country was born, sits a survivor of two world wars that will never sail again. Name that survivor AND name the country, with the one word commonly used for both.

Is this for a history class? Knowing the subject area may help narrow it down.

Israel?

The "never sail again thing" is throwing me though. Israel isn't landlocked, is it? Perhaps that's a metaphor. <goes to check map>

By the way, you're not involved with Auger, are you?

All I came up with from Google was some yahoo "help me cheat on my homework" site. No answer though.

Are you implying I'm cheating on homework? I dont know how the school system works in the USA, but we dont go back to school until Sept 5th here. On top of that, I'm studying programming, so I dont even have a course that would ask a question like this. And even if I did, what sort of educational value would anyone get out of trying to solve this question?

Maybe that google and wikipedia dont solve every question for you ... yet ;)
Anyway I don't think pjp wanted to imply that.

I'm implying that whomever posted the same question to the yahoo group was cheating. Generally, stuff of this nature isn't of any grade value, but I think it is poor form to find the answers from somewhere else just to "look good," being among the few that had the solution.

Oh, I thought the yahoo site was sarcasm. I didn't know it was real :s
And if its any consolation, this isnt at all going to make me "look good". It was an intriguing question and I was curious what the answer was. I probably will continue to be curious until either someone replies with the answer or the post falls onto page 2 of OTW.. and by then, I will probably have forgotten about it all together ;)

We can add answers.com to that list too =]

Possibly a ship that has been sunk after surviving both world wars, that bears the name of a battlefield on which a country was decided. I was thinking along the lines of Trafalgar ( but thats not a name of a country ).

Yorktown?

There's been a battle there, and ships were called after it.

I'm only thinking of the USS Maryland (US Battleship), but I have no clue...

Which country is known as Yorktown though?

I thought of "Holy Land," but I'd forgotten about the 1 word limit. I'm thinking it is less literal than it appears, but can't make sense of the country part.

I thought Kursk, but I don't think that region (Kursk Oblast) is fully independant from Russia

I think it has to be Israel ...

On a battlefield where a country was born, sits a survivor of two world wars that will never sail again. Name that survivor AND name the country, with the one word commonly used for both.

Many other countries were born on battlefields, but how many were born where something that survived two (aka 20th century) world wars is 'sitting' ?

Can't Israel be used to define the people as well?

On the other hand, it's too defeatist to really be Israel -- after all, there's no way to tell whether the diasporah won't one day be undone.

I'll thus lean towards the USSR....?

Do we know of any boats on land?

But if you were trying to cheat on homework, yahoo answers is a great way to do it.
