Hi,
take a look at http://www.gentoo.org/ and read the announce about Gentoo Linux 1.4 Release Candidate 1.

I looked at the dload sites... but the live-CD seems to be just :
livecd-basic-1.4_rc1-r2.iso 14-Sep-2002 14:33 123M
livecd-ut2003-x86-1.4_rc1-r1.iso 16-Sep-2002 15:18 219M
Too small to include working GNOME.(KNOPPIX is working distro with OpenOffice, KDE, gimp almost all that is included in normal distro... And can use the swap-file of a working installation or on DOS partition, and config-changes can be saved on floppy so that most of the cutomisation can be saved w/o a need to trash thing on the HDD)
There are stage2-xxx.tar.bz files but don't know his purpose... |

Hmm,
never used knoppix or the live-cd. But the announcement says
Quote: | ... and a new "live" bootable CD that boots directly into a runtime version of Gentoo Linux 1.4_rc1. Includes KDE 3.0.3, KDE 3.1-beta1, KOffice 1.2, OpenOffice 1.0.1, GNOME 2.0.1 (2.0.2 on the way) and Mozilla 1.0 (1.1 available for testing.) |
Don't know if that is on the live-cd.

Hi,
livecd-basic-1.4_rc1-r2.iso contains only basic system though it has X, but no KDE or GNOME.
livecd-ut2003-x86-1.4_rc1-r1.iso is almost the same but has Unreal Tournament 2003 demo ) |

instead of kde or gnome it has blackbox (or fluxbox, not 100% sure which it is), and the ut2003 demo is uber-l337 although sound didnt work for me |

gentoo is optimized for a specific cpu or cpu architecture.
by making something like knoppix, gentoo would be forcedto be compiled for i386/i486.
and i don't see the reason for making something like this!
knoppix is okay and i dont see a reason for gentoo to be bootable with a live cd like knoppix.
cheers
