According to the technotes, Quote: | Firewire support will break if you enable kernel preemption in newer kernels (>=2.6.4) | . Does anyone know what "will break" means here, and if the origins of this problem are known and whether it is perhaps already being solved? |

Won't compile here. _________________ clue = if 0 == 0 then clue else error "The poster didn't have any clue when he posted this." |

linux-2-6-4-gentoo-r1 from gentoo-dev-sources compiles w/o problems here. I cannot currently test firewire functionality, though, as I don't have physical access to my Athlon 64 machine over the weekend. |

Do you have SMP activated?
Is this with 64-bit or 32-bit? _________________ clue = if 0 == 0 then clue else error "The poster didn't have any clue when he posted this." |

According to the change logs for 2.6.5 on www.linuxhq.com, the problems with pre-empting are fixed...
Hopefully, we shall be given a nice stable 2.6.4, or even 2.6.5 soon via gentoo-dev-sources .

Good - then maybe I can screw it up by combining CK and love patch sets into something utterly fantastic like I did with 2.6.4.

SMP is not activated, and the system is purely 64 bit.
The compilation went fine, but I did not even install the compiled kernel yet, as I have no physical access to that machine right now. The only thing I can say is that compiling the kernel did not produce any errors with kernel preemption = y and firewire support = m.
I'll update this tomorrow when I have a chance to install the kernel. But as 2.6.5 is out, I think I'll upgrade as soon as an ebuild is available |

In fact Firewire did compile as modules, but they did not load. A vanilla kernel 2.6.5 remedies this (but now I've got problems with lm-sensors ) |
