Having some problems with xfree 4.2 on my Radeon 7500...
X came up with no problem after running XFree86 --configure, but only runs in 8 bit color mode.
To test, I installed Red Hat. Was able to support 1280x1024 32bpp. So, either anaconda uses some hack to get the card to work right, or I'm missing something. I'm assuming the latter.
Tried copying over a working xf86config generated by Red Hat's anaconda, and X spit out "driver needs to be specified." Specified driver="ati", and X said chipset doesn't support 24bpp.
Tried the gatos ati.2 drivers ( http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ati.2.php ), but after install, startx cause my monitor to power down, possably just pushing it out of range. Probably unrelated, but I had a similar problem with WinXP until I disabled 4x AGP in BIOS.
Should I compile in gatos' drm-kernel ( http://gatos.sourceforge.net/drm-kernel.php )? Or would simply adding DRM support in the kernel, as suggested in an earlier post ( https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=15298 ) possibly do the trick?
I really love this distro. It's fast, it's clean, it's easy. But 8 bit color is, well.. evil.
Any help is appreciated.

I think you need to specify a 32 bit (as opposed to 24bit) display subsection in the screen section. the xf86cfg genererated XF86Config (at least for me) ended with a 24 bit one, so I just added a 32 bit subsection and now it works fine.
It should look like
SubSection "Display"
Depth 32
End SubSection
or something like that. _________________ I like tapes. |

24 bits should work with Radeons, but try 16, that at least should work. Also, for radeons,
driver "radeon"
is available. (although I believe "ati" loads "radeon" automagically) |

I think there are more than one place you can specify bit depth in XF86Config; one refers more to the actual colors on screen (24bpp) and the other to the way they are internally stored (32 bit s . ) It might be that you need 32bpp for the dri to work, but 24 is okay otherwise? in any case, my (mobility) radeon 7500 was dropping down to 8bpp untill I added that section. _________________ I like tapes. |
