gqmpeg cannot play when invoked from icewm??

When I start gqmpeg from an xterm in icewm, everything works ok, but when started from the icewm toolbar command line, or from the main menu, or by an icewm keybinding, the play button does not work, although I can skip forward/backward in my playlist as normal. Pressing the play button (or invoking 'gqmpeg -p', even from xterm) simply doesn't do anything..
I need help! Anyone know of this problem?
