Just saw a notice over at www.mythtv.org that a new version (0.16) is expected within the week (estimated 9.8.2004). Hopefully it won't be too long before they make it into portage (there are some new/updated modules that I'm interested in checking out). |

I saw that one too. Testing it when it comes out.
On the ivtv front, Chris Kennedy is producing numerous new versions of the driver every day. However I haven't found a version that is stable enough to use on a daily basis.
Does anyone know if (and which) driver version of his is stable enough to use. It doesn't need to be the latest, as long as it is more or less stable.
For those who want to follow the progress:
drivers are here: http://67.18.1.101/~ckennedy/ivtv/
mailing list archive is here: http://www.poptix.net/ivtv/current/threads.html (or http://www.poptix.net/ivtv/) _________________ "Great minds don't think alike. If they did, the patent office would only have about fifty inventions." - Wally |

Thanks,
It seems that ivtv-0.1.9-r4 is based on the Chris Kennedy patch version ck71d, which can indeed be found in Chris' repository at http://67.18.1.101/~ckennedy/ivtv/OLD_good-ones/. I tried version ck100z, but that one didn't work good enough for me.
Also, the firmware used in the ebuild is pvr250_18a_inf.zip. I think this is the same as the one I use, although it comes from the PVR250_18_22170.exe file.
I'll give ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck71d.tgz a spin when I get back home again.
A good new one might be just around the corner though, see this message: http://www.poptix.net/ivtv/current/msg00202.html _________________ "Great minds don't think alike. If they did, the patent office would only have about fifty inventions." - Wally |

I had a MythTV box running great with PVR-250's and Nvidia card (lirc, ivtv,... everything was running great). I was running gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r13, and I lost my harddrive today. Since I am going to have to rebuild it, what kernel is working best these days?

Hello (first post)
I just got my card today (the 250 version) and ive been trying all night to get the damn thing working and im lost in a sea of misery.
Running 2.6.8.1 from kernel.org, will switch to any 2.6 kernel if the need be.
When i do a modprobe ivtv i get:
Linux video capture interface: v1.00
ivtv: Unknown symbol i2c_bit_add_bus
ivtv: Unknown symbol lseek
ivtv: Unknown symbol read
ivtv: Unknown symbol i2c_bit_del_bus
ivtv: Unknown symbol open
ivtv: Unknown symbol close
All I need to know and im sure lots of people would like that too, is what are the basic modules needed to get ivtv working and what patches do i need.
if someone gets it working i will kiss them.
EDIT: I got the card to display static but no actual picture yet but
tveeprom: Hauppauge: model = 32032, rev = B182, serial# = 2832674
tveeprom: tuner = <unknown> (idx = 82, type = -1)
tveeprom: tuner fmt = NTSC(M) (eeprom = 0x08, v4l2 = 0x00001000)
tveeprom: audio_processor = MSP3440 (type = 11)
And it said no tuner found. |

Hi,
It's not that hard once you know how, but that's Linux
When installing and compiling the driver, make sure /usr/src/linux points to the correct kernel tree. I'm using 2.6.7-gentoo-r14 as there are some issues with 2.6.8.1 and cd-burning (has to do with the scsi rights).
I've build the ivtv driver manually from the ck versions, but wirwzd seems to be very happy with the latest (unstable) version of ivtv from portage. (BTW do not use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge <some_package>, but use /etc/portage/package.keywords, see this thread).
Also, for the IR device, use lirc from CVS, you can find the instructions on the lirc website.
Good luck! _________________ "Great minds don't think alike. If they did, the patent office would only have about fifty inventions." - Wally |

Yeah I tried the portage version and a bunch of other ck versions. I finally got one to load and work. But the problem is that there is no tuner module at all its in /ur/src/linux but when doing a depmod -n | grep tuner it shows nothing.
So the reason why I am getting nothing but snow is becuase its not loading the drivers for the tuner.
EDIT: Okay I got everything kinda working now. But I need to find a smaller app that I can use to test out the tv tuner part (other than using raw /dev/video0). Also can mythtv be ran in window mode becuase I would like to watch/record tv and do other stuff at the same time on one monitor. |

I have been trying tvtime and all I get is this error.
videoinput: Card failed to allocate capture buffers: Invalid argument.
Thats why im kinda putting off installing mythtv becuase there is alot of crap to compile and setup and i dont want to do all that for nothing. |

With the new release, does anybody know if MythWeb will run on PHP5?

Has anyone been brave enough to try the 0.16 release and care to share their experiences? |

0.16 release went great! It has changed a little, but no major issues with the install. I stuck with php4 for mythweb.

Hi, I've just tried to follow the guide somewhat to set up my htpc.
Changing things to recent versions and to fit my hardware I've managed to get everything until this running:
# mythfilldatabase --manual
I live in sweden so I set things to europe-west and sweden/norway
the error as erported is:
nice: tv_grab_sn: No such file or directory
I quick updatedb && locate tv_grab_sn reports nothing (I guess I don't have the file then).
I read on google somewhere that dagenstv.com who supplied us swedes with the tvchart had stopped doing that (but I can't confirm opr anythng until I get this working).
my first question would be in which package this file is placed or where I can get it (as well as where it should be put ^^)
the second question is if it will find my channels on its'a own, or if I'll have to manually add the frequencies.
Thanks in advance, Flamie |

Actually, last time I checked the tv_grab_sn was broken and thus will not work. I use "televinken" (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~lindahl/projects/televinken/) to fetch listings from a couple of different sources.
Just download it, drop it into /var/www/tv and make appropriate changes to the channel fetching script. Then run: mythfilldatabase --file 1 -1 /path/to/xmltvfile_generated_by_televinken.
The first time you run mythfilldatabase manually you'll have to enter the frequency or the channel number, ie SE15. I guess the easiest way is to call your cableprovider and ask for the channel numbers.
To update the table I run the mythfilldatabase command above via a cron script. This has been working great for me until a few weeks ago when I accidently did a "drop table"... |

I just twiddled around some and founf that tv_grab_se seems to be working.
a simple symbolic link between _se and _sn solved all issues.
However I'm only getting a very few channels (like 10-15 for sweden) is televinken much better at this? |

I wen't back and made sure I've checked things in the kernel, and notices I can't chose bit-banging interface, anyone know what I need to select to enable this?

Hello,
I have tried 1000 different ways to get lirc working and can't. Having let my frustration rest a few days so I dont' just come on the forum and scream, I shall ask about a couple of specific issues. I would appreciate VERY much any help.
First, I have a leadtek TV2000 XP Expert (I think that's what it's called), though obviously I haven't gotten to the MythTV stage yet.
OK. I cannot find several of the appropriate options in the Kernel. I am running gentoo-amd64 2.6.7-r14 and the "Linux infrared controller" never shows up under character devices no matter what I check. same story for ioctl 4 under RAID.
As for lirc, I have emerged many different ways and most recently from CVS. Currently I'll assume its failure to work is a problem with the kernel.
Thanks you very much,
Stephen |

Hi!
On newer kernels the lirc stuff kan be found under networking options in the kernel (right above bluetooth)
If you figure out how to enable the bit-banging option please share it with me, mine is disable as of now.
the 0.6.6 sources for lirc need to be patched to recognize the leadtek controls but I haven't got about to do that yet (I prefer not patching source code).
Worth pointing out is that I got my leadtek remote to work with the default lirc package (0.7), however I can't verify that all of my buttons work as they don't do give off any output (some do work though, such as the numbers and the "enter" button).
I hope this helps, and if it's anything more I'd be glad to help. |

Hello,
Thank you very much for replying.
Unfortunately Istill can't find it in networking. Where exactly is it please? That is, I found IRDA, but not lirc.
THank you so much,

Incidentally, I have got no problem selecting Bit Banging interface! Go figure! I have got less than no idea why and my frazzled nerves will snap if I do much with it now. Perhaps later. (I am going out right now). Want me to send my config file though?
I still see nothing else though.
THanks,
Stephen |

Ok 1.5 weeks later and I still get nothing on my initial test of
Code: |
cat /dev/v4l/video32 > /home/strider/test.mpg
|
I end up with a zero byte file.
Since I'm using the svideo input I've tried
Code: |
/usr/local/bin/test_ioctl -p 6
|
and every other number from 1 to 9 for that matter.
Now the big difference between that guide and me is I'm still back on the 2.4 kernel and I have an ATI not an NVidea. I'm also not starting from scratch as this PC is my only machine and it's already heavily built for other reasons.
I haven't taken the plunge to 2.6.8-gentoo-r3 but I will if it's necessary. Do I stand any chance of getting this to work on 2.4?
Now I don't think the ATI thing will be an issue since it works just fine as is. I don't need to run a seperate screen on the second output I'm happy with the clone going to it as is. Alsa also already works so why would I need to set it up?
So I'm mostly looking for recommendations on how to approach this. I could emerge -C myth, mysql and ivtv and try the new kernel. Or I can hope that there is a magical util that might tell me where to start looking.
Really this install is still far too hard. It reminds me of getting sound working back in 95. The good news is in a year or two emerge mythTV will probably be all thats necessary to make it work from scratch. I'm just not interested in waiting that long |

/dev/v4l/video32 is actually access to raw YUV data, you most likely meant to Code: | cat /dev/video0 > ~/test.mpg | which would output an mpeg. |
