ok we have to be really really close, I get 90% green with parts of the picture in behind it.
I'm assuming it's that I'm pushing the card/machine/somthing too hard?
A quick test of mplayer /dev/video0 and sure enough I'm watching channel 2. and it doesn't look that bad. This is of course coming over the tuner not the svideo. I'll worry about that little issue later.
I guess next is to figure out why I don't have sound?
Never mind, channel 2 doesn't have sound is why I don't have sound I guess it's time to get myth going and happy
Once again thanks for the help ipod and tv all working at once. This is great |

It's hard to push the capture card too hard. I've seen notes where the sound will drop out if the card gets too hot though. I used to see a little instability when the processor was pegged, but it's been much better with the latest e-build.

Myth is probably your best bet for recording off the s-video input anyways. You can switch inputs on the card with the 'C' key. Although to be honest, I haven't tried any recording from the input. I think there's some threads on archiving off video on the MythUsers list. (edit: More key info at:
zcat /usr/share/doc/mythtv-0.16/keys.txt.gz | less )
......
Yep! Here it is, needs a bit of manual configuring though, but nothing worse than you've been through already
Manually recording from composite or S-Video input with Myth
Wait until you get used to watching whatever show you want, whenever you want, and commercial free. You'll never make it through a commercial break at a friend's hose again |

I think that fb support is only meant for when myth is compiled for embedded use. You'll want to re-emerge myth without the fb use tag. |

|
|
Howdy fellow gentooists,
I have a strange problem. Suddenly, for no particular reason, my PVR250 gives only a black screen in MythTV, but now has a new /dev/radio0 device! How about that?
After some logfile scrutinizing, i found out that things go wrong during the init of the saa7115 module (hence, no image). It should be found and registered as a client on the i2c bus, but it doesn't. Did anybody ever come across this weird situation? My MythTV setup is rendered useless by this, hopefully you can help me a bit further. I appreciate your help on this one
My setup is:
ASUS Pundit - P4 1.8 GHz
PVR-250 (rev. 1)
Gentoo GNU/Linux on a 2.6.8-r3 kernel (gentoo-dev-sources)
MythTV 0.16
ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck114s
As I said, the init of the saa7115 module goes wrong. Mythbackend and mythfrontend both complain about not being able to read from the decoder devive (/dev/video0). Modprobing ivtv starts probing for saa7115, but never finds it at the i2c address 0x21 like it should. I know for a fact that some lines are missing in the log, such as these:
Code: | saa7115: starting probe for adapter ivtv i2c driver #0 (0x10005)
saa7115: detecting saa7115 client on address 0x42
saa7115: writing init values
ivtv: i2c attach [client=saa7115[2],ok]
saa7115: status: (1E) 0x48, (1F) 0xc0
...
saa7115: decoder set norm PAL
saa7115: set audio: 0x01 |
As you can see I received a shiny new radio device on my PVR250 board:
Code: | mythtv@pundit ~ $ ls /dev/v4l/ -la
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 .
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 ..

crw-rw---- 1 root video 81, 24 Jan 1 1970 video24
crw-rw---- 1 root video 81, 32 Jan 1 1970 video32 |
Here are the lines from the ivtv modprobe log that concern the radio:
Code: |

...

BTW, this is the /etc/modules.d/ivtv:
Code: |

alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
# options ivtv ivtv_debug=255 ivtv_std=2 tuner=5
# options tuner type=5 pal=1
# options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
# options saa7115 debug=2
# add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner
|
Note that all options here are really optional these days; ivtv 0.1.10 autodetects everything quite well (see the doc/modules.txt that comes with Chris Kennedy's ivtv package). |

Hmm- The modules.txt does say 'in general', and since it seems that it's detecting a radio device that's not there, might be worth specifying the options in /etc/modules.d/ivtv, at least to see if that's part of the problem.
I haven't tried any versions of ivtv past anything in ck's oldgoodones, but at http://67.18.1.101/~ckennedy/ivtv/HOWTO.ivtv-0.1.10 he still recommends some module load lines:
Quote: |
TV 0.1.10 changes:
1. no module load lines needed for saa7127, make sure to load it before ivtv.
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1 tuner=2
options msp3400 once=0 simpler=1 simple=0
add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner saa7127
|
If you really don't have a radio device (250MCE's and 350's only) it would seem that it's not actually auto-detecting properly. |

Hobbes-X, thanks for you insights, but as I was near the point of taking my PVR250 back to the shop, I thought: why not re-emerge the kernel, build it again along with the modules AND the ivtv ebuild that resides in Portage. The kernel now is 2.6.8-r7 instead of 2.6.8-r3 btw.
At first the ivtv modprobe produced a bunch of 'cannot allocate memory' errors in the log, but modprobe -r and then modprobe again did the trick: all errors gone, everything behaves as normal again. It seems my MythTV box just wanted to take a few days off and torture me
Anyhow, everything back to normal again with the ivtv-0.1.9-r4 ebuild (~x86) which is actually Chris Kennedy's ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck71d.
Cheers |

Hi there,
I am setting up MythTV with a BT8x8 card (Hauppauge WinTV), and everything is going well so far. The one problem that I am having is with the Zap2it DataDirect service. I signed up at the web site and can browse my listings in mozilla, but Myth won't download them with the follow error..

I am certain that I am using the same user/pass that I am using on the web, and that I am using a new-enough version of wget (1.9.1r2).
Is there a step that I missed somewhere? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time,

Hi Frank-
Any chance that there's a character in your username or password that wouldn't have been escaped? Everything else should be fine if you're using wget-1.9.1-r2, and the same username and password. |

You need to use alsamixer or some other mixer to attach to Line.
In Alsamixer, you arrow over to LIne, press space to attach to that line.
Make sure that the Line is on Mute as well, otherwise you'll hear sound constantly.
YOu should see an M on the line. _________________ Scott Carr * OpenOffice.org * Documentation Maintainer

Here's a quick outline of how I got it working, went really quick after I figured everything out.
I'm using the 2.6.10 kernel so I didn't need any kernel patches to get this working.
I emerged ivtv and mythtv from portage, and both work fine. I then compiled everything that I need into my kernel, the list is listed in previous posts, so I won't repost that here.
Then finally I found that the biggest problem is in what order things are loaded. I made a little shell script that must be run as root to load everything when my computer boots up:
Code: |
!/bin/sh
# This script is designed to load MythTV properly...
# It should be run as root to work properly!
echo "Loading MythTV..."
# Load IVTV Kernel Module
echo "...Kernel Module IVTV"
modprobe ivtv
# Save kernel log for problem solving purposes
#echo "...Logging Kernel Messages"
#dmesg > /root/ivtv-load-dmesg.log
# Change permissions for Nvidia devices
# PAM Sometimes changes nvidia permissions which causes MythTV to fail.
echo "...Checking Permissions"
chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia*
chown root /dev/nvidia*
chmod -R 0775 /mnt/video
chown -R mjbirdge:root /mnt/video
# Finally Start MythTV Backend
/etc/init.d/mythbackend start
echo "MythTV Loaded."
|
This seems to work just fine, you can then configure LIRC...
Hopefully this helps somebody, I found this out by rebooting and finding that it didn't work anymore.
If you put the ivtv module into the modules.autoload.d file to autoload at start, I found that it caused some issues with MythTV, I find it much more reliable to start it in this way...

So, I'm not sure if I'm completely retarded, completely misguided, or just not seeing something that is obvious and apparrent to everybody else.
I can get IVTV working, the audio on my MB working, and even the ivtv-fb fb-out to TV from the 350. But, I FOR THE LIFE OF ME, cannot get lirc to work with ANY of the afore-mentioned HOWTO's...
My problem: lirc-i2c + 2.6 kernel.
Apparrently nobody seems to be having problems. I've searched the forums and only found a couple instances of people looking for the patches for the kernel.
I haven't found anything for the latest and greatest Gentoo 2005 install's... but, I figured the gentoo-sources (now 2.6.11esque) would have the same lirc-i2c stuff.. Nope.. nothing... so, I went as far as to regress to the 2004.3 gentoo live install.. Same deal...
I mean, I've been using linux for a LONG time... and I'm no idiot.. so much so, that it took me a LONG time to de-ego myself enough to post this message.
So, how... without using love-sources (I have bad luck with them) can I get lirc-i2c.ko? Is there a way? What I would prefer is a lirc-i2c kernel patch.. for 2.6.x, From what I know, one doesn't exist... and all of the links that WERE around for 2.6.9ish are either DEAD, or not valid anymore. In fact, the ONLY link that seems to work nowadays is THIS one.
Anybody?
Thanks,
Micah |

I know that lirc hasn't been included in any offical kernels for quite a while. I had it working with 2.6.8 I believe, but I am having difficultly making it work with 2.6.10 vanilla.
Make sure when you emerge lirc you emerge it like:
Code: | LIRC_OPTS="--with-x --with-driver=hauppauge" emerge lirc |
Hope that helps some... _________________ My Folding@home Stats!

Boy do I feel retarded.
LIRC_OPTS="--with-x --with-driver=hauppauge" emerge lirc
solved my problem.. Not sure why I never saw that before.. or if I never acknowledged it, but... that was it.. Verdict is in: I'm an idiot. hehe
Then again, I tend to get common-sense-blinded when I work on a project for too long. Yeah, thats it.. I'll use THAT excuse..
Thanks a lot ColeSlaw.

The latest kernel solved alot of problems.
Now we have some trouble due the limitations by our cable provider.
In the netherlands some cable providers use the irdeto2 encryption, and I think we need extra hardware before we can view al the FTA channels.
Is there ayone who can help us provide some tips or tricks to recieve the FTA channels? |

Does anyone have a copy of the original guide? I'm getting a "Page cannot be displayed" when I click on it.
Currently, I have my M10000 running with the Unichrome drivers under X (I'm not bothering with a WM like gnome or KDE). I'm using the 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 kernel, and I have the streamzap remote.
Thus far, all those components appear to be working OK (as far as I have been able to test them). I'm looking for a good gentoo guide on installing MythTV on this box, and have been coming up empty for the last couple of days (lots of dead links everywhere).
What I haven't yet set up:
1. MythTV
2. lirc (installed but not configured (and complaining about undefined symbols))
3. datadirect (zap2it)
4. tv output
5. automatic log-in on boot which starts up mythtv (no keyboard / mouse, just a remote control)
6. This one may blow it all, but I'm also trying to figure out how to do this over a network boot, while currently it is set for a local hard drive boot (I intend to remove the hard drive). I suspect that this will have me start a lot of this over, but I'd like to get all my configurations set up and backed up so I really know what I'm doing later on. On top of that, there's a good chance that the only machine that I will have available to boot from will be running Windoze NT 4.0 (This is a machine I'm setting up for my father; personally, I'd be using FreeBSD). On the other hand, I may be able to set up an old 1st generation pentium running debian with maybe a few hundred megs of hard drive space and 16M of RAM... _________________ Life without passion is death in disguise |
