Ultra5, 2.6.3, X dies "no devices found"

Im running an Ultra5 pgx24
2.6.3 with a VERY verbose set of kernel options, and every video driver that looked even vaugely like anything to do with ATI enabled

Ive tried with the latest X in portate, 4.something.99 i think, and the version directly before it.

ive tried to use every X vid driver that was compiled, and in every case X quits on startx giving the error "no devices found"

anyone else had this kind of an issue with 2.6.3 ? or is this likely a local problem?
