Well finally got aroujnd to it, isn't payday wonderful!

Put together what I hope is a half-decent system, for messing about with 64-bit Linux, and specifically Gentoo.

Starting from the 2004.0 stage1 from the Live-CD I am fully bootstrapped, leaving the machine doing whatever it does whilst at work today, with "emerge system" presently running (40 out of 81 as we speak)...

Will keep you updated on progress... looking forward to the results, as I am sure you can see from my signature, this machine is better specified than either of my remaining two machines!

Fingers crossed, and thanks for all the help and advice found in this forum which I have been reading for a while now... once I am up and running, more than willing to TRY and help others.

Thanks again,
Rob 8O

:D

"emerge system" has completed! Doesn't seem to take long on these Athlon64 processors! (The reason the Dual-Celeron is running Fedora is that I couldn't face bootstrapping Gentoo on that machine... done it once before... took forever!)

Going for the bog-standard gentoo-dev-kernel-2.6.3-rc2 I think it was, as this seems to be the most stable, unless I have misread something somewhere...

Just about to type "make menuconfig" and get on with the compiling!

Rob.

Any ideas on how to get cool'n'quiet working? I am sure I read something in this forum somewhere, but blowed if I can find it...

Sorry if I am asking the obvious!

Rob

emerge gnome

failed... due to ephipany-1.0.3 wanting to compile with mozilla 1.5, not 1.6 that the emerge installed...

did...

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" emerge =ephiphany-1.0.7

...all compiled, and now...

emerge gome

...is running along nicely.

Rob

Off to bed now, see where we have gotten to when I get up in the morning... thanks again for the help... all the help I needed to sort out the above I got from this forum... pretty neat 8)

--- edit

emerge gnome

failed on ghostscript... machine just crashed... present strategy... load the prebuilt packages and see if ghostscript is on there...

unless anyone has any better ideas?

:D

right, have downloaded the packages disc... have copied the ghostscript prebuilt emerge file to /usr/portage/packages/All

emerge gnome

has successfully finished... got the sound working... now just need to install all and sundry...

gnometris seems to crash... only tried to play it as it came with sound... how do I report bugs?

Rob
