"qpkg -d" shows me a gob of duplicate packages installed on my gentoo box. Whassup wid dat? Do I need to have dupes? I thought "emerge -u [package]" replaced the old package with the new. Not true? Why? Help please.

Two suggestions.
  • man emerge. Look for the clean option
  • dict.org. Look for words like "with", "that" and "these"

Is it possible that some of the packages you consider duplicates are being kept because they have empty SLOTs?

Note that clean does not remove unslotted packages.

try this:

emerge prune package
or
emerge -P package

that should remove the old version.
but make sure the duplicate is not needed!
