Hi all having a slight problem with gentoo 64 install here actually a rather large one. After I boot up from the cd rom and I select my Kernel the gentoo logo comes with a bar along the bottom. However it seems to only want to load up half way across the bar before stopping and not wanting to budge. I almost a completer noob to linux and I'm wondering if its got something to do with SATA hard drive a western digital raptor. I have tried two other linux distrabutions which I successfully installed on a another non 64 bit machine, slackware and redhat but the scsi hard drive has been the bane of my life. It also prevents me from trying windows xp 64 beta. The motherboard I have uses the silicon image 35112 drivers and its not a raid setup. I have loaded the standard Gentoo kenerl with the doscsi option but I can't get by load screen and I have waited quite a while. Tried it 4 times and with 2 different livecd's with no joy. Or maybe I'm just not waiting long enough. Do I have to compile the kernel with an update for the scsi drivers or am I just a lost cause . The gentoo version I have is 2004.0. Any idea's?

I think that your problem may be an incompatibility between the 2.4 kernel and SATA drives...2.6 should work fine.
The LiveCD that you are using is base on 2.4 I think, so you'll have to boot from another LiveCD (perhaps Knoppix, or other), or from another drive with 2.6 installed. |

The 2004.0 LiveCD is based on a 2.6.x kernel. For proper support of the Silicon Image SATA chipset, make sure you are using gentoo-dev-sources as your kernel. Anything else is currently unsupported, since gentoo-dev-sources includes a large number of amd64-specific patches to make things run smoothly.
2.4.x kernels are officially deprecated in Gentoo 2004.0. 2.4.x are also very problematic on the amd64 platform and should not be used...
If you have any other questions about installing Gentoo/amd64 2004.0, please take a look at the technotes. You can find a link in my signature below. _________________ Jason Huebel

I had that problem. It seemed like it would freeze in the exact same spot as you and i couldn't figure out why. Well, it turned out that it was modprobing my PCI ethernet card (i have 2 in my box...the 3com that comes on the board and a Realtek one - 8139too). The modprobe missed my ethernet card on my board but was picking up the other one in the PCI slot and trying to get an IP address for it - which took a long time. Hit " F2 " when it's sitting there. It should give you a verbose screen with info on it. It'll probably be sitting there waiting for a response from a DHCP server (i think that's right); if indeed that is the problem you are having. I had to wait about 3-5 min each time. Oh, and it's the Gentoo 2004.0 Live CD for AMD64 that i was using.
Cheers. _________________ Gentoo AMD64 2004.1, AMD64 Athlon 3200, Asus K8V Deluxe, 1 gig 3200 ram, GeForce FX 5900XT 128, ATI Wonder VE Remote, HP 420i DVD+R+RW, HP Scanjet 2200c, Epson Stylus C84 |
