Hi, have an Athlon64-3400 with 1 gig ram and Nvidia FX5900XT and get around 750 FPS in glxgears in the little window at 1280x1024 at 24bit. That seems to me like way too slow. And the Computer reacts very slowly when running glxgears (e.g. a letter appears in console 1 or 2 seconds after typing it)

Here is my XF86config (the relevant part as I see it.
Quote:
Load "glx"
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce"
VendorName "nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NvAGP" "2"
Option "RenderAccel" "on"
Option "CursorShadow" "on"
Option "CursorShadowAlpha" "52"
Option "CursorShadowXOffset" "3"
VideoRam 131072

Just in case... did you emerge nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx?

What's the output of glxinfo?

Many people experience this. This is usually caused (read: the bug is triggered) by another application frequently refreshing itself, e.g. gkrellm, wmcube, etc. Try running with a minimal X setup (twm) and the problem should go away.

I'm waiting for the next release of the nvidia driver for amd64. If the bug isn't fixed, I'll swap my card for an ATI one.

You load Mesa GLX instead of the NVidia's. Now I recall I had this, too (a bug in the ebuild?), and removed the offending library by hand. Google for nv_check.sh which should do some sanity checks.

...you need to run the opengl-update utility to select the nvidia glx.

Just run opengl-update nvidia as root. I actually placed it in my /etc/conf.d/local.start script so that it is automatically run each time I boot.

This should switch your system to the nvidia glx rather than mesa.

@birnenpfluecker:

did this "opengl-update nvidia" also solve the problem with eterm?

i've had the same problem in eterm, now i'm using just gnome/metacity with the wonderful "gdesklets" ... it's really worth a try!
