groff-1.17.2-r2 failing to install with 1.4 / gcc 3.2

I think something is fubared in the install script. Looks like it compiles correctly, then I get:

Yes /var/tmp/portage is owned by root and yes its writeable. Its a wierd error and other packages dont seem to be affected by what ever is causing it. Any ideas?
