Hey, I'm considering putting gentoo on my emachines t6000. I've been browsing around the forums, and it seems that there are some things that just won't work
1)3d ATI drivers--not until the summer at least
2)Stable Java
3)god knows what else-wine perhaps
I put the free version of Suse64 on the machine before, and after using portage, any rpm distro just annoys me, so unistalled it the next day..
So the question lies- I want to get a fast gentoo running with 3d, and one where I don't come running to the forums for someib-compat issues--- has anyone put the athlon-xp distro(I assume the pentium 4 instructions would work as well). from the forums, it looks like there might be a problem with the northbridge and AGP--not sure if that is a 32bit or 64bit specific problem or not.
So -- which architecture would someone recommend installing on the t6000 |

Installed it as an athlon-xp and got into trouble with xfree not finding libs - ok fine.Something else really put me over the edge though.
I tried different xfree versions and with version 4.2 (me thinks - the oldest one in the portage tree anyway) it crashed always after 10 minutes when the screen wanted to go blank with an APIC error - with apic disabled.
I didn't bother anymore after that and got my money back - I am a wussie and admit it.
Plus I didn't feel to see if the ati drivers really materialise this summer when I can't get my money back anymore. |

Mine is working great in 64bit mode.
A Quick Search for t6000 will reveal extra tips.

If you have an ATI video chipset, you're still not going to get 3D acceleration. However, you can get good 2D acceleration with the latest development version of xfree in portage (4.3.99).
Like you said, there aren't any 64-bit ATI drivers currently. So if you REALLY need 3D acceleration, you should consider installing the x86 verison of Gentoo.
As far as Java is concerned, my understanding is that blackdown java is relatively stable on amd64 now. I don't use it personally, but I know many people do. Drop in on the #gentoo-amd64 channel at irc.freenode.net and see if someone can tell you more... _________________ Jason Huebel
