I just converted my SPARC Solaris box to Gentoo Linux.

I'd like to leave a disk partition that has user files in it untouched.

I can mount that partition as '-t ufs' and it comes up 'Read-only'.

It does not complain at 'mount -w' but is still read only .

Is there any way I can get this partition to come up read-write?

TIA,

Chuck

There is experimental write support for ufs in the kernel, but it's currently marked dangerous, so use it at your own risk. You'll probably need to enable it in your kernel config and rebuild first however.

You do need to build the kernel with it configured in, and you can damage
your ufs file system if you actually try to write to it. (Unless something has
changed in the last year or so.)

Last time I tried (two or so months ago), I b0rked the Sun partition pretty badly. Of course, the quality of the SCSI drive was extremely questionable. Troubleshooting these little bastards can be a bitch, what with the long boot 'til OBP prompt. Good thing the disk wasn't necessary ;-)
