I left my Gentoo install disc in my computer and overnight my Mcafee scanned the disc. Apparently Portage and Nmap are viruses/exploits haha. I thought everyone would get a kick out of this:

So it detects Nmap as an actual virus? I know it does the same with subseven clients and other trojans, but a valid program?
Funny to see nmap as a virus but not Bonzi Buddy, Gator, or Kazaa. _________________ Come rapture, so I may inherit the earth. |

who knows?? Maybe the 2004 livecds are just totally trojanned... I'd better trust a very well known company than a few people working on an *opensource* project...
edit: I tried to fix my system by installing windows xp, but the strange thing asked me for a license key. Where do you get those? Would my door key just work? And if so, where do I put it?? In the floppy drive? I'm confused... |

I think you are supposed to cut your drivers lisence into a key-shape and insert it into your nose. |

Just another proof for McAfee's incompetence. I'm really wondering how long it will take until big corporations (like IBM - they still ship their ThinkPads with McAfee AFAIK) to realize that there are better alternatives (like Sophos). I guess this will be the day they'll be out of business. _________________ I'm really wondering what Lovechild is doing nowadays... |

Perhaps McAfee think OpenSSL doesn't have patches for those old, old security bugs yet... _________________ Reality is for those who can't face Science Fiction.

I'm going to e-mail their support and ask them why it was marked as a virus. Will be interesting to see their response. I'll post it here once they reply.

I can understand Nmap...a program could use it to scan other computers in a virial program. But portage? That's just odd. |

no their livelyhood depends upon people using a buggy os, at least till ms start shipping their own though how they can charge to fix problems they caused is going to be odd, effectivly they'll have an incentive to write bad os's _________________ Giay tay nam | Giay nam cao cap | Giay luoi |

Dear Graham,
Thank you for contacting McAfee Consumer Online Support. My name is *****. Having
reviewed your e-mail regarding McAfee VirusScan detected legitimate; I would be
happy to support you in resolving your issue.
Please follow the instructions given below to resolve your issue:
Windows XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files automatically to
the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected file could be stored there as a
backup file, and VirusScan will be unable to delete these files. You must disable
the System Restore Utility to remove the infected files from the C:\_Restore folder.
Disabling the System Restore Utility (Windows XP Users)
1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the System Restore tab.
3. Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
4. Click the 'OK' button.
5. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.
Note: To re-enable the Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step three
remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
I would like you to run a "DOS Scan" on your system now. However, I would like to
inform you that a Scan in DOS does not prompt for your permission before deleting
any infected files. If any system files are infected and cannot be cleaned, they may
be deleted or renamed. You may need to restore those files or reinstall the
Operating System, if the virus has damaged these system files beyond repair, after
executing this command.
Instructions for running Scan in Dos are given in the link below:

Thank you for visiting McAfee Online Support. I appreciate the opportunity to
support your needs. You may receive a survey asking for your comments on this e-mail
experience. Your feedback will help to ensure that I'm providing the highest
quality service possible.

Whatever it is that McAffee support is smoking, I want a TON of it! It has to be really good. Since I work in a support organization, I'm truly offended to be associated with morons like McAffee.

I have just played around with the live chat the McAfee on their website (please don't all head over that, I've worked in support departments, and that would just be cruel)
Here's the text of the conversation (I've snipped the chaps surname):
Quote: | Please wait while we find a technician to assist you...
You have been connected to Steve.
Steve : Tom, thank you for contacting the McAfee Online Support Center. How can I assist you today?
Tom Wesley: was just a query re scanning some files on a cdrom
Tom Wesley: can you open an external link to get a screenshot?
Steve : Could you please provide me that link?
Tom Wesley: http://myownbox.com/haha.jpg
Tom Wesley: Do you know what type of infection this may be?
Steve : Tom, if I understand correctly, you have a issue regarding unable to clean the infected files. Is this correct?
Tom Wesley: No - the files are no infected with any virus, but the report says they are. Is there a problem with your scanning engine?
Steve : No Tom, as VirusScan is showing them as infected files then it is sure that these files are infected.
Steve : Please tell me if you see a red square with white "M" or a blue shield with a red "V" near the system clock which is at the bottom-right side of the screen?
Tom Wesley: I am not at the PC at the moment, and my query is more as to why the files are shown as infected when they are not.
Tom Wesley: Is there any way that they can be submitted for review and clearing?
Steve : Yes Tom, please visit "http://vil.nai.com/vil/submit-sample.asp" and submit a sample.
Tom Wesley: Thanks, I will do that.
Steve : Your reference number for this chat session is 4118313.
Steve : Thank you for visiting McAfee Online Support Center. You may receive a survey asking for your comments on this chat experience. Your feedback will help to ensure that I'm providing the highest quality service possible. |
I've a good mind to email submissions of virus samples, see if we can help them fix the bug in their detection engine. _________________ Tom Wesley
