How comfortable are you at running the server from your home?

I've been with the cable company for years now and, except for my own lack of knowledge, I've not had any problems with them. I have 5 static IP's and can run any software I wish.

With the basic $60/month service my IP address is dynamic and port 25 is blocked (so no e-mail hosting). To get 5 static IPs would cost me almost $200/month, which is enough to rent three dedicated servers from Core Networks, but even then I'd have to pay the electric bill, buy the UPS and maintain batteries, maintain hardware as parts get old, etc. For a hobby it's okay, but for a small number of business servers I can't justify it.

linode.com supports Gentoo and if you're savvy enough you can actually replace the kernel they use on it with your own as I did. They start at $20 a month.

Linode.com

Is amazing.

I am running 3 hardenend profiles with custom kernels.

You will need to spend some time to deploy the your server first time, because the default profile install everything on the same partition. But you can boot it after with a recover livecd and do all things in the gentoo way :)

I do recommend it.

Anyone had any experience with VPSLink? Prices seem very good. I asked before I got some good feedback, but also recommended Linode. My current go daddy BS gets memory bottlenecks, so memory is a big deal to me. Seems VPSLink's hosting offers much more for less money.

EDIT: Actually not -- I think I read it wrong. :D

http://www.manitu.de/root-server/produkte.php
the site is in german only though.
you get a pretty good setup for 39euro a month (with VAT, so when ordering from outside the EU it should be even 19% less). the machine ran stable since i ordered it 6 months ago, and the network is not too congested since its a pretty small company. that also leads to really good support, within office hours you mostly get an email-reply within 15 minutes, sometimes even from the company owner himself - all in all im satisfied with what i get, and if hosting in .DE is no problem for you, i think you will be too.
anyways, i cant say anything about the order process from outside of germany, i guess the support will help you in that case.
