make.profile messed up after emerge rsync - WHO ELSE?

Last night I did an emerge rsync - looked fine as always.
Now if I want to emerge I get:
"Note: /etc/make.profile isn't available, an 'emerge sync' will probably fix this.
!!! No profile directory, system mode unavailable." emerge sync does NOT fix it.

But there is an /etc/make.profile. I can't cd into it. I can't chmod it.
If I do "ls m*" in /etc I get:
"ls: make.profile: No such file or directoy
mailcap make.conf ...........

I DON"T GET IT.
Please help if you can :roll:
