|

I have done a couple innstalls (4 actually), and this time decided to install som GRP binaries or whatever they are. Anyway, the first thing I noticed when running gdm for the first time was speed. It seem that all the installations where I did things manually seem to run faster. The one change I did make in this install was using the ResierFS, which I understand can be run in some "debug" mode that will reduce performance (when looking for errors or something). But yeah, im attributing the performance decrease to the GRP packages....comments appreciated _________________ "Fell deeds await... Now for Wrath... Now for Ruin... and the Red Dawn... !" |

It really boils down to a matter of preference. Gentoo has always been about source installs, but some ppl don't have the CPU, space, and or time to compile. There are benefits and drawbacks.. like anything in life.
GRP Installations takes less time than source installs.
When you install a GRP package it is not always the most current version.
You cannot optimize GRP packages to your preference like you can with source
settings flags will not be relevant.
When installing from source you can optimize the package to your preference.
However, being being too aggressive sometimes will cause failed compiles.
take lots of time... depending on what is being installed. kde, gnome, etc.. are long source builds.
these are just a few quick pros and cons... but it is really about the user.. do you want to try and make it a little faster to load? do you want to exclude gnome flags if you use kde and visa versa. Do you want to save time and get it up and running now? Do you have a slow computer? I am sure there are more things to consider.. these are just a few.. |

I pretty much already decided source compiling is the way to go. If I can get my box working with the network here at the office ill start now =) _________________ "Fell deeds await... Now for Wrath... Now for Ruin... and the Red Dawn... !" |

I agree about the source code (hey thats the fun part of Linux as well).
I don't mind leaving overnight the laptop or my desktop for huge compilations such as KDE, QT etc.
But there are actually times where i need to install something really fast, check it and see if it runs ok...and maybe if i like it compile it later. _________________ Gentoo the rising hope |

If anyone else reads this thread with a similar problem, I went ahead and compiled and noticed a HUGE increase in speed when booting gnome and running basic apps _________________ "Fell deeds await... Now for Wrath... Now for Ruin... and the Red Dawn... !" |
